Today in History: The First Network Crash

The date: October 29, 1969.

The place: UCLA

The attempt: to send a message from one computer to another for the first time ever.   A test of the newly developed DARPAnet.

The message sent: “L O G”.

The message received: “L O ” and then the network connection crashed.

The article doesn’t say, but I imagine this happened next.

The outcome: They sat on hold waiting for a representative from the cable company to answer their call because the call was important to the cable company.  After 45 minutes, someone finally came on and in a bored sounding voice asked them to turn the router off and on again.

Fainting Kittens

I don’t know if this is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, or the saddest.

Both, I think.

“charlie and spike are two kittens with myotonia congenita, otherwise known as ‘fainting goat’ syndrome. at the slightest sound, the kittens respond by collapsing and falling into a rigid paralysis which lasts about a minute before they return to normal.”

Drink Sizes Then and Now

Way back when a 12 ounce can was TWO FULL GLASSES! Now the smallest restaurant size is 20 oz in many places.

The Band Automatic Name Generator

This is awesome.  Generate random cool-sounding band names.

The Band Automatic Name Generator (BANG)

Mine?  “Bilingual Slang”.  Or maybe “Sapphire Hose Commotion”.

Forget Jem, the Holograms are going solo

According to this article on Futurismic, this is the newest popstar in Japan.

The kicker? SHE DOESN’T EXIST.

She’s a computer generated hologram.

So, is it a Japanese oddity, or the future of bubblegum pop?
