A few nights ago Page1 was finishing up evening chores by putting bag of garbage outside at about 9pm. She came running back into the house yelling that there was something in the backyard. She thought it was a raccoon, but maybe it was just a big cat, but it was on the fence and it was HUGE!
It turns out that it was indeed a raccoon. We have seen them in our neighbourhood before, but never this early in the evening. He was perched on the back fence, eating whole peanuts out of our neighbour’s squirrel feeder. I ran to get the camera, and slowly made my way into the back yard.
The raccoon was obviously intent on getting as many peanuts as he could before he left, so he didn’t seem afraid of me at all. He glanced at me occasionally as I approached, but kept digging out peanuts and eating them until I was within about 10 feet.
He then turned and ambled along the fence, spotlit by MrsPages holding a big battery lantern, to the far corner of the yard. He jumped up into a tree and sat there looking at us, obviously just waiting for us to leave so he could resume his snack.
We’re always amazed at how much wildlife exists in our backyard. We’re only a mile or so from farmland, but we are still smack in the middle of suburbia.
A couple of years back, other neighbours had a raccoon removed from its nest in their chimney and it was a hissing, spitting ball of mean. I have no doubt that this little guy could be like that if he really tried, but our encounter this night was pleasant and ended well.
Of course, I didn’t try to get between him and his peanuts…

It’s an unpleasant fact of parenting when you’re both close to 6 feet tall: stroller handles are too short. Walks become painful, tiring, hunchbacked ordeals.
One solution would be to have the other LittlePages push LittlestPage in the stroller when we go out. However, the primary purpose for strollers, it would seem to her siblings, is to try to get LittlestPage to achieve orbital velocity (or, if there are any wheelchair ramps around, actual orbit).
So, we decided on another tack: make stroller handle extensions!
Last year’s a local garage sale included a broken umbrella stroller of similar design to ours. You can likely find one at the Goodwill or local garage sales. (Haggle. We got ours for free because it was broken.) I used a dremel tool to cut the rivets that held the handle on, but you could just as easily use a hacksaw to cut the tubes off if you sand or tape the cut ends.
Lay the new handles alongside the existing ones. In this image, the new handles are the dark blue ones on the inside:

Then use some cheap hose clamps to attach the new handles at the top and bottom:

Voila! One back-pain-less stroller:

We get comments on this one when we go out, and now that this stroller is dying, I plan on removing the extensions and putting them on the new one as well.
This post is also available as an instructable.

Okay, would the one of you responsible for taping a random drawer handle in the kitchen completely closed with painter’s green masking tape please take responsibility for it?
Yeah, I thought so. We had just as much response from the LittlePages.
Life’s little unsolved mysteries.

The LittlestPage likes to roam around “au natural”. I generally encourage clothing, but during the summer she often delighted in her desire. As it gets colder, I have become more insistent.
Last night it took awhile to get her into her pajamas. The house is getting cold at night.
She crawled up into bed with me carrying a book belonging to computer-techie-guru-geek MrPages.

Then she proceeded to take off her pajamas.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“That man naked. I naked too!”
I sent her to go and see her Dad.
